Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison. BFMTV informs about it.
Sarkozy was found guilty of malicious conspiracy with his assistants in order to receive funding for the 2007 presidential campaign from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Sarkozy will become the first President of France to be sent to prison. Although he will return home today, he will soon be appointed date of detention.
– What happened in this courtroom today has a very serious impact on the rule of law and trust that we can have before justice. For more than ten years of investigations, millions of euros have been spent on studying the issue of Libyan financing, which, according to the Criminal Court, has not been confirmed, – he told reporters.
Sarkozy added that he “sleep in prison with his head raised.”
– I will accept my duties. I will follow the court instructions. If they really want me to sleep behind bars I will sleep behind bars but with dignity. I am innocent. This injustice is a scandal, ”he said.
The decision was made by a court in Paris. At the meeting, 70-year-old Sarkozy came with his wife, a model Karl Bruni, and three adult sons-Jean, Louis and Pierre.
The sentence was more severe than expected. When announcing the decision in the hall, shock exclamations were heard, some present closed their mouth with their hands. Karl Bruni posted a picture with her husband from the court on a million subscribers on a million subscribers and signed him: “Love is the answer. Hate won. ”
The President of the Court believes that Sarkozy has allowed his close associates and political supporters to contact the Libyan authorities to receive or attempt to receive financial support.
