The Secretary General of NATO believes that Europe and the USA need to unite stronger than ever.
The publication stated that the appointment of Rutte as the head of NATO in early 2024 gave hope for improving relations between the Alliance and the United States. He has already managed to win the reputation of “Trump’s whisperer”, conveying the Republican’s message to Europe.
According to analysts, Rutte understands that Europe needs to spend more on defense. Earlier this week, he met in Warsaw with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, praising the country for record defense spending.
For the second year in a row, Poland leads NATO in terms of defense spending as a percentage of GDP, the publication emphasized. In 2024, the country allocated more than 4% of its economic output to defense.
“This is a clear signal not only to our adversaries, but also to the US. Europe understands that it must do more to ensure our common security. And that starts with increased spending and capacity building,” Rutte said in Warsaw.
Analysts believe that the NATO Secretary General’s words are a response to Trump’s threats during his first term in the White House to withdraw the United States from the Alliance if the allies do not start spending more on defense, the publication noted.
In addition, during a visit to Paris to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, Rutte mentioned the war in Ukraine. According to him, it also poses a threat to the United States:
“Russia, working together with North Korea, Iran and China, is not only a threat to Europe, it is a threat to peace and security, yes, here in Europe, but also in the Indo-Pacific region and in North America. That is why we must unite – Europe, North America and our global partners to ensure the security and prosperity of our peoples.”
NATO and Ukraine – the latest newsEarlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that NATO should help Ukraine end the war with the Russian Federation through negotiations, but from a position of strength. According to him, the member states of the Alliance should continue to provide military assistance to Kyiv.
In addition, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he will block Ukraine’s accession to NATO. He noted that Kyiv can become part of the EU, but not the Alliance.
