On June 9, units of the Special Operations forces of the Armed Forces struck the Russian airport “Savaslak” in the Nizhny Novgorod region, from which Russians often bomb Ukraine. It is from this military facility that the MiG-31K fighter jets, which are carriers of aerobalist missiles “daggers”. According to preliminary information, two planes are amazed-MiG-31 and Su-30/34.

And on June 1, 41 enemy strategic aviation aircraft was amazed on the territory of the Russian Federation. Among them are A-50, Tu-95, TU-22 m3 and Tu-160.

Is there a lot of aviation left with the enemy? The journalist learned Briefly about.

The power of the former grandeur Before the start of a full -scale invasion in Russia, there were approximately 1370 aircraft. In particular:

  • 380 Su-27 heavy fighters;
  • 267 MiG-29 light fighters of different modifications;
  • 131 MiG-31 interceptor;
  • 274 Front bombers Su-24;
  • 125 new Su-34 aircraft;
  • 193 Su-25 rifle rifle;
  • 124 heavy bombers-16 TU-160, 42 TU-95 and 66 TU-22M;
  • 91 Navy Air Aviation Aircraft-22 MiG-29K/Kub, 43 Su-27/33, 22 Su-24 and 4 Su-25.

But much of these machines are inherited from the former USSR, which means that they have been over 30 years old. During this time, the resources of most combat aircraft have exhausted. And after the introduction of sanctions, the production and maintenance of many types of aircraft has become complicated or impossible.

One of the most dangerous aircraft that are in service in Russia can be considered MI-31-the carrier of ballistic missiles “Dagger”. And, very well, now no machines in Russia are produced, the last aircraft was collected in 1994. Now in Russia there are just over 100 migs of different modifications.

A little more at the enemy of strategic bombers. However, about half of them cannot fly. Old aircraft require constant repair and appropriate maintenance. By the beginning of 2025, the Russians had about 30 Tu-95 ammunition and a dozen Tu-160. It should also be understood that TU-22M3 (about 50 units) are not “strategic” in the full sense of the word and “serve” carriers of aerobalist missiles X-22/X-32.

How much was destroyed According to several ratings (for example, World Population Review, Global Firepower, Visual Capitalist), the Russian Federation is in second place from the list of the most powerful air and space forces in the world after the US, but it is an aging fleet with which the aggressor country has no resources.

According to official data of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, as of the end of May 2025, 372 aircraft of the Russian Federation were destroyed and damaged. According to verified data, the losses are 141 combat aircraft, of which 124 were destroyed, 17 were damaged.

First of all, we should thank the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Secondly, some planes suffer from catastrophes and explode in the air due to malfunctions. What is not surprising in general: according to various estimates, about 550 Russian combat aircraft have already developed their technical resource.

In particular, among the destroyed aircraft were the following models: Su-25-Supervitors, which are actively used to support ground operations, a considerable number of front bombers Su-34, as well as multi-purpose Su-35 fighters. And during the operation, the Web destroyed a third of Russia’s strategic aviation-41 aircraft.

Seven aircraft of distant radar detection and guidance A-50U (although enemy propagandists and claim that they were written off) were also destroyed.

Losses among aviation personnel are also significant. According to the Air Force, at least 267 Russian military pilots were killed in the war against Ukraine, the preparation of which lasted for years and cost millions of dollars.

The enemy’s aviation industry fails With such a high loss, Russia should restore its combat aviation, to modernize it and repair it. But the Russian economy is exhausted by war and sanctions, so there is no sharp increase in combat aircraft production.

As reports Military expert Alexander Kovalenko, “We do not see any sharp increase in production at the level not in 2014, but at least 2018.” During this time, the supply of combat aircraft decreased almost four times. If in 2014 101 aircraft were supplied to the Russian army, then in 2024-only 28. “Successes”, as they say, are obvious.

And from the beginning of 2025 and as of today, the air-space forces of Russia have been transferred “up to” 4 multifunctional fighters of the Su-35 and two front-line bombers Su-34. In total, in the first 5 months of 2025, the PCS of the Russian Federation received only 8 new aircraft.

The production of combat aviation in Russia today is demonstrated by one of the lowest in the last 10 years. Russia cannot remove this industry from the state of stagnation, which began in 2014-2018. At that time, the low production rates were explained by the lack of need for more aviation, but the war in Ukraine showed that the problem is completely different. In the case of existing sanctions and degradation of technical, technological processes, production is reduced or closed. With the current indicators and trends of Russia, Russia is not able to fully compensate for the losses of combat aviation.
