The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, after the expiration of the NPT-3 nuclear arms control treaty, stated that Russia had systematically ignored the provisions of this agreement for many years.

Key points:

  • For a long time, Russia violated the terms of the nuclear arsenal control agreement, as reported by Marco Rubio.
  • The expiration of the New START treaty forces the United States to develop a renewed strategy in the field of nuclear relations.

Russia did not comply with the terms of the SNO-3 agreement — Rubio About Rubio said in a statement released on February 6.

Rubio noted that NPT-3 expired on February 5, and since then nuclear arms limitation advocates, as well as many voices in the media, have tried to present the end of the treaty as evidence that the United States is initiating a new phase of the nuclear arms race.

These fears do not take into account the fact that Russia suspended the implementation of the new SNA treaty in 2023, after systematically flouting its provisions for a number of years.

He added that when the treaty expires, the United States will have a choice: either unilaterally commit, or recognize that the modern era requires a new approach — namely, an agreement that reflects the fact that the United States may face not one, but two nuclear adversaries in the near future: Russia and China.

The SNO-3 (or New START) treaty is the last significant agreement between the United States and Russia on the mutual reduction and limitation of strategic offensive weapons. It was signed in 2010 in Prague by Presidents Obama and Medvedev, entered into force in 2011 and was supposed to become the basis of “nuclear stability” in the world.
