Researchers have created an implant that synthesizes

A team from California University in Davis developed a neurophytene that gives people with paralysis the opportunity to speak almost in real time, just mentally mentally forming phrases. The work was published in Nature.

Unlike previous Nki-The, the new system transforms brain activity not into text, but into sounds, including intonation, tone and pauses.

According to the researcher Maitri Weiragark, the main goal is to create a flexible neurointerface for speech, which will allow people to control the pace, rhythm and expressiveness of communication. In focus, patients who have lost their ability to speak due to lateral amyotrophic sclerosis (bass) and other forms of paralysis.

The experiment was attended by a man under the pseudonym T15. He was implanted by 256 microelectrods into the brain zone responsible for articulation. The recorded signals were analyzed by the SI decoder, which distinguished the language parameters-for example, the height of tone and ringing. Further, these data were treated with a vocal, who synthesized the voice, as much as possible to the patient’s natural voice.

The delay in signal processing was only 10 ms, which is almost not felt. The device recognizes any words, exclamations and even melodies, so users are not limited to the vocabulary and can self-control intonation and emotional color.

In the first test, where the listeners had to listen to synthesized speech and choose the right phrase from the list, the system showed 100% accuracy. In open testing, the correct recognition reached about 56%. The natural speech of a patient without a device was understood in only 3.5% of cases.

The project is not ready for daily use. Scientists plan to scale up to 1600 electrodes instead of 256. Paradromics startup, which in May conducted its first successful implantation of a chip into the human brain, plans to test such NKI. Clinical tests will take place in UC Davis, and the leaders of the study will be Neurosurgeon David Brandman.

We will remind, in September 2024 the patient of Synchron learned to manage the “smart” house of thought.
