A programmer has successfully launched Mac OS X 10.0, also known as Cheetah, on the Nintendo Wii, a gaming console released in 2006. This achievement was driven by skepticism from online users who claimed it would be impossible.
The initial idea for the project originated with Keller in 2013 during his university studies. However, it gained momentum five years later when he encountered a comment on Reddit from user u/CussdomTidder, asserting that running Mac OS on the Wii was unfeasible. Keller took this as a personal challenge.
“Last year, when I saw that Windows NT had been ported to the Wii, I felt a renewed sense of motivation,” Keller stated.
Keller believes that despite lacking extensive experience, the endeavor provided an excellent opportunity to learn new skills.
The Nintendo Wii proved to be an ideal platform for this project due to its architecture, which is based on a PowerPC chip similar to those used in older Apple computers.
Keller developed a custom boot loader, adapted the system kernel, and created new drivers.
These modifications allowed him to enable even the console’s USB ports, facilitating the connection of a standard keyboard and mouse for system navigation.
Keller described the process as “satisfying,” particularly in light of the skepticism he faced. He noted that this experience reinforced the notion that projects perceived as unattainable are often worth pursuing.
