People’s deputy Yaroslav Yurchyshyn asked to open a case against the director of the documentary film “Russians at War” Anastasia Trofymova. He announced this on his Facebook page on September 26.
– I submitted a statement to the Office of the Prosecutor General and the Security Service of Ukraine regarding Trofymova and will wait for the opening of criminal proceedings. It is Ukraine that should react first and initiate a case that violates our laws and vision of war, – wrote the people’s deputy, who is also the chairman Parliamentary Committee on Freedom of Speech.
According to Yurchyshyn, the actions of the Russian-Canadian director fall under the article of the Criminal Code on justification, recognition as legitimate, denial of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, glorification of its participants. This is punishable by imprisonment for five to eight years.
– Canadian director of Russian origin Anastasia Trofymova shows the occupiers as people who fight mainly for money and feel disillusioned by participating in hostilities. And in civilian life, they are good people and generally wonderful family members. It seems that these are not murderers and invaders of foreign territory, not terrorists or marauders, but normal people who were simply unlucky to be on our land. And this is not just absurd, but a part of Russian propaganda that managed to infiltrate the Western audience. This is an attempt to push the narrative that Russians are the victims of this war. This is an attempt to remove responsibility and give the occupiers a human face, – believes the representative of the “Voice” faction.
Yurchyshyn noted that Trofymova previously shot a documentary film for Russia Today, and that at present “they are trying to sneak this propaganda thing into the program of the festival in Zurich, Switzerland. So we have to act ahead of schedule.” This year, the Zurich Film Festival will take place on October 3-13. In the comments to the post, Yurchyshyn added his statement dated September 25.
