Growth of onion prices: factors and expectations

Since October 20, wholesale prices for onions have been rising on the domestic market of Ukraine, analysts of the EastFruit project inform. Agrarians report that part of the vegetable crop is still in the fields, while their quality indicators are gradually deteriorating. In addition, onions in the fields have started sprouting, which will also negatively affect the future quality of products.

So, as of today, local producers are ready to sell onions for UAH 7-13/kg ($0.17-0.31/kg), which is an average of 12% more than at the end of last week. The main reason for the increase in the price of these products, according to experts, is the fact that many farms are forced to stop harvesting onions due to unfavorable weather conditions, as a result of which the supply of these products on the market has significantly decreased. Analysts also report that farmers prefer to send a large part of onions of good quality to storage, selling them in small quantities at the moment.

At the same time, despite the positive price trend in the onion segment, the prices for these products today on the Ukrainian market are still on average 21% lower than in the same period last year.

What will be the dynamics of prices for vegetables until the end of 2025 – the specialist’s forecast The deputy chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, Denys Marchuk, said that the situation with vegetables this year is undoubtedly better than last year. According to him, in October, prices for vegetables will be kept at a low level until the moment they are sent to storage. Prices may increase after that, as warehousing certainly involves additional costs.
