Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) is a key barrier to cryptomators. This was stated by Flashbots research group in a fresh report.

Experts found out that Even in high-yielding spam transaction systems, arbitration bots fill blocks faster than the networks are able to scale.

“This is not a theoretical or local problem. We see it everywhere-from Solana, where MEV bots occupy 40% of the space of blocks, to the L2-ecosystem of Ethereum, ”analysts said.

Among the examples given:

  • In leading rolaps, more than 50% of gas costs are spam, which generates less than 10% of commissions;
  • From November 2024 to February 2025 the Base bandwidth increased by 11 million gas/s, but all this consumed an autonomous software.

According to Flashbots experts, most projects focus on technical scaling, ignoring the economic restrictions of the market.

MEV bots are actively using low commissions, sending millions of transactions. One example: Bot earned $ 0.12 by paying $ 0.02 commissions. But for this agreement, it sent 350 million transactions, consuming 132 million gas – the equivalent of four blocks of Ethereum.

The model of work is similar to a scanner with a built -in algorithm: the Bot initiates a basic transaction and looks for arbitration on Dex’ah, spending about 2.6 million gas. If nothing is found – the action is not completed.

One of the catalysts of spam was the use of private memples. They were conceived as protection against frontranging, but in rolaps, bots are forced to storm blocks to access private information, so they send transactions constantly.

The situation is complicated by the absence of an effective auction of commissions – the procedure for the inclusion of transactions is determined mainly by the amount of gas consumed.

“The gap between the commissions paid and the gas used indicates that SPAM imposes significant external networks on the networks, bringing minimal value. It is a sign of systemic inefficiency of the market, ”Flashbots emphasized.

As a result, the network is overloaded and equipment requirements are increasing, which increases commissions for ordinary users.

Researchers see the solution of the problem in the implementation of “programmable privacy” – a mechanism that allows you to see real time transactions, but limits the possibility of abuse of information.

We will remind, the co -founder of Ethereum Vitalik Bustin called Mev one of the main threats to the centralization of the network – along with liquid stinging and high threshold of starting a full -knit.
