Electricity Price Cap Review Increases Imports During Peak Demand Hours

A recent review of price caps in the electricity market has led to a significant increase in imports during periods of high demand, including nighttime hours. This adjustment aims to address the energy system’s needs more effectively.

According to Energy Minister Herman Nemchinov, the changes in price limits have facilitated a more competitive environment for imports, particularly during times when the energy system is experiencing shortages. “Imports have notably increased during the hours when they were most needed, as the pricing allowed for competition,” he stated.

Previously, nighttime price caps did not accurately reflect the market conditions. Historically, these caps were set lower due to a traditional surplus of electricity during the night. However, the ongoing conflict has altered the balance of supply and demand.

Nemchinov emphasized that the restrictions on nighttime price caps failed to mirror the actual market situation. Even during these hours, the energy system faced deficits, leading to power outages in certain cities more frequently at night than during the day. The revision of price caps has thus helped to realign the market conditions, making imports economically viable during these critical periods.

The review of electricity price caps has led to increased imports during high-demand hours, addressing shortages in the energy system. This adjustment reflects a shift in market dynamics due to ongoing conflict, allowing for more competitive pricing and improved supply management.
