Countries are monitoring the shadow fleet of the Russian Federation after alleged attacks on underwater cables.
The Joint Expeditionary Force’s operation, called Nordic Warden, is said to use AI to evaluate data from multiple sources, including an automatic identification system used by ships to share information about their real-time location.
“In the event of a potential threat, the system will monitor a suspicious vessel in real time and issue a warning that will be communicated to both NATO allies and member countries,” the publication writes.
As British Defense Secretary John Healy said, AI will enable the control of “large” sea areas using a “relatively” small amount of resources:
“Nordic Warden will help protect against both deliberate acts of sabotage and cases of gross negligence, which we have seen lead to damage to submarine cables.”
The publication adds that the new technology will work in part of the English Channel, the North Sea, the Kattegat Strait and the Baltic Sea. The operation was launched after reports of damage to the main submarine cable in the Baltic.
Damage to cables in the Baltic SeaAs UNIAN reported, Estonia sent ships to protect underwater cables after incidents in the Baltic Sea. In the past two months, several submarine cables in the Baltic Sea have been damaged, including the BCS East-West Interlink cable, the C-Lion1 telecommunications cable connecting Finland and Germany, and the Estlink 2 electricity cable connecting Estonia and Finland .
Finnish officials said they found a 60-mile mark on the seabed that suggests the Eagle S — a tanker linked to Russia — may have been responsible for cutting a cluster of valuable data and power cables.
