Power outages, as well as a potential lack of internet and cell service can affect the course educational process in Ukraine, as well as the duration and time of rest. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine emphasized that since educational institutions have autonomy in determining the structure of the educational process, they can themselves set the length of the academic year, the schedule of classes and ways to organize lessons in the current situation, based on the volume of the academic load, the age characteristics of the children, their physical and psychological state.

This is stated in the letter sent by the Ministry of Education and Culture to the departments of education. Training during blackouts: proposals of the Ministry of Education and Culture:

  • inspect and, if necessary, provide students with access to LMS platforms (Google Classroom, Moodle, Microsoft Teams, etc.);
  • place educational materials for each lesson in the LMS system for the period from November to February;
  • use modern electronic sources, in particular, the web platform “All-Ukrainian School Online”;
  • provide students with the necessary printed textbooks and educational materials;
  • prepare printed materials (rules, tables, tasks, etc.) in case of a long-term interruption of electricity supply and/or access to the Internet;
  • to determine the schedule of teachers conducting consultations for students in synchronous face-to-face/remote form (taking into account the availability of alternative energy sources in the institution and the situation of power outages in the settlement/territorial community);
  • to ensure the implementation of educational and training programs, the curriculum through the consolidation of educational material, the organization of independent educational activities of students.

In addition, the Ministry of Education proposed, if possible, to move lessons from the winter months to June 2026 (with the exception of graduation classes), to increase the duration of the winter vacation by moving the spring vacation to the winter term, to consider the transition to a six-day educational week instead of a five-day one, as well as to ensure education in two shifts taking into account the increase in daylight hours.
