The European Commission called the elections in Belarus fictitious and illegitimate.

– Today’s fictitious elections in Belarus were neither free nor fair. The people of Belarus deserve a real say in who runs their country. Ruthless and unprecedented repression of human rights, restrictions on participation in political life and access to independent mass media in Belarus deprived the election process of any legitimacy, the statement said.

The European Commission also called for the “immediate and unconditional” release of all political prisoners, more than a thousand of whom are being held without reason, including an employee of the EU representative office.

  • On January 22, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on non-recognition of the presidential elections of Belarus. Earlier, the United States declared the illegitimacy of Lukashenka.
  • On January 26, the day of the elections, Oleksandr Lukashenko held a press conference in Minsk. Among other things, he denied the statement of Volodymyr Zelenskyi about the proposal to strike the Mozyr refinery at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
