On Saturday, December 6, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On this occasion, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi addressed Ukrainians with congratulations.
The head of state emphasized that respect for the military has become a “phenomenon of the new Ukraine” and a real art, which is expressed in hundreds of images, murals and dedications throughout the country.
“The sixth of December is a great day, the day of those who, holding weapons, prove Ukrainian strength, the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And this is about those who really unite our people in struggle, gratitude, memory and, of course, in great respect,” Zelensky said.
The President of Ukraine emphasized that respect for the military is not only support, prayers and donations. This respect became “a separate phenomenon, a phenomenon of the new Ukraine” and turned into art. These are hundreds of dedication images that were born all over Ukraine, combining millions of thanks to the Ukrainian soldier.
The head of state called on Ukrainians to stop, pass by these murals and portraits, look at them and remember what these people did in the war for Ukraine’s independence.
Volodymyr Zelenskyi emphasized the importance of knowing the history of everyone who defended his native Kyiv and then flew to the blockaded Mariupol to help, or grew up in Donbas and defended the capital, was a world prize winner in jiu-jitsu and became a defender of Ukraine, who was a world-famous opera singer and became a Ukrainian soldier. And he, who was a jeweler, had, as friends say, golden hands, and with these hands he destroyed the invaders.
“Different destinies. The same values. Different names. Equal respect for all. They grew up in different cities, different families, different houses, but everywhere they were brought up as true heroes,” the president emphasized.
The head of state mentioned the names of fallen heroes who demonstrated extraordinary courage:
- Danylo Pogorilov, who, despite the astigmatism of both eyes, saw the enemy and led the group out of the encirclement at the cost of his life.
- Oleg Fadeyenko (Malysh), who liberated Kupyansk and Kherson and became a Hero of Ukraine.
- Dem, who died in battle the day after his birthday.
- Taras Berezyuk, who gave his life for freedom on the Independence Day of Ukraine.
The President expressed confidence that one day a small child in peaceful Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Lviv or anywhere in Ukraine will ask his parents: “Who is this?”, and they will know what to answer. This memory and respect will be passed down from generation to generation.
Volodymyr Zelenskyi recalled his words with which he addressed the Ukrainian soldiers on the first day of the full-scale war: “Stand strong. You are all we have!”.
“And you stood strong. We stood when almost no one believed in Ukraine, when they told us: you have a week, you have no chance, you have no other option than to surrender. And you stood. And they persevered. And that’s why Ukraine is standing,” he emphasized.
The head of state also noted the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men and women who stood side by side with the Armed Forces. He remembered the first female soldier who led an artillery unit, a sniper who killed dozens of invaders, and a machine gunner who went to the front at the age of nineteen: “Bird. Taira Xena Ore. And tens, tens of thousands of brave girls and women in the Armed Forces. All those who had their own affairs, but chose one – to protect their native land.”
According to the President, Russia is not only hitting cities, but also destroying dreams, attacking destinies and futures, leaving Ukrainians no choice. But this choice was made – in favor of Ukraine.
“Black could work on the railroad, but he had an iron will and fought for the country in Kharkiv region and Donetsk region. He is forever 24. Krylov was born in Lviv and protected us near Bakhmut. He will forever be 21. Box was born in Kyiv and protected us near Zaporizhzhia. He will forever be 23,” the president recalled the fallen defenders.
In conclusion, Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the military, who on the battlefield do everything to ensure that Ukraine has confidence, dignity and strong arguments at the negotiating table.
He expressed gratitude to all branches of the military: infantry, artillery, reconnaissance, landing, special forces, missile forces, tankers, unmanned systems forces, special operations forces, attack aircraft, engineers, signalmen, cyber security, medical forces, Air Force and Navy.
“To everyone who defends Ukraine every day in every direction. Whose bravery we see, and whose protection we feel. Who is “at zero” gives his all. Who changed his own life so that life would remain unchanged in Ukraine. Everyone is a warrior. Everyone is a hero. I congratulate each and every one on the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine! Eternal glory to you! Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!” – concluded the president.
