From January 1, 2026, the Republic of Cyprus officially took over the powers of the chairman of the EU Council for the next six months, replacing Poland in this position. Kyiv expects that strategic decisions aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and speeding up the process of its integration into the community will be made during this six-month period.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a telephone conversation with his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulidis, during which he emphasized the critical importance of keeping the Ukrainian issue among the key priorities of the European agenda.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that full membership in the European Union is not only a political goal, but also a fundamental guarantee of security for the state in the conditions of ongoing aggression by the Russian Federation. The President assured the partners that Ukraine continues to fulfill all the necessary reforms and obligations to comply with EU standards. During the Cypriot presidency, the opening of new negotiating clusters is expected, which should bring the country closer to the final entry into the organization.
The presidency of Cyprus takes place in a difficult period for the continent, when the issue of stability in the Mediterranean and the support of Ukraine require coordinated actions of all members of the union. Nikos Christodoulidis confirmed Nicosia’s intentions to promote the bloc’s unity and provide the necessary assistance to Kyiv within the framework of pan-European programs. The Ukrainian side hopes that Cyprus’ leadership will help consolidate efforts to use frozen Russian assets to rebuild Ukrainian infrastructure and support the economy.
It was previously reported that from January 1, 2026, Cyprus will head the Council of the European Union, and support for Ukraine will become one of the most important areas of its work.
It will be recalled that Turkey sees the future of Cyprus in the cooperation of the two parties.
Also, Cyprus will supply gas to Europe as early as 2027.
