The head of state emphasized that Ukraine longs for peace, but is not ready to pay for it with new losses and concessions that do not guarantee security in the future. “Peace is better than war, but not at any price. We have already paid too high a price,” Zelensky said.
According to him, it is not just the fact of signing documents that is important for Ukraine, but a just and durable peace that cannot be destroyed by the Kremlin’s new wishes. “It is important for us to have a just, strong peace so that it cannot be broken by one more wish of Putin or another Putin,” the president emphasized.
Zelensky emphasized that no agreement can be considered valid if it does not stop hostilities in practice. “The agreement exists when the war is stopped. If it’s just written in letters on paper, it doesn’t actually exist,” he said.
The President also recalled the negative experience of the Budapest Memorandum, which did not protect Ukraine from Russian aggression. “We were not protected by this agreement. This means that she was not strong and did not act,” Zelenskyi said.
He explained that the future peace agreement should include not one document, but a whole package of solutions with real security guarantees from the US and European partners, which should be officially approved at the political level.
“It is necessary to clearly know what the partners will do if they come from Moscow again with aggression. How will Ukrainians be protected, how will these guarantees work,” the president emphasized.
According to Zelenskyi, Ukraine will not agree to a formal peace, which leaves the risk of a new war. “I believe that the agreement should be fair and effective for Ukraine,” concluded the head of state.
