The new presidency in the US and the situation at the front seem to force Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who previously insisted on fighting for every centimeter of territory, to start considering the possibility of negotiations.

The Washington Post writes about it.

While Ukrainian troops are trying to contain the Russian army, and US President-elect Donald Trump is trying to make peace, Zelensky has recently shown a greater willingness to negotiate. This is a significant shift in his position, as he previously promised to fight for the return of all captured territories.

Zelenskyy has not directly stated his readiness to make concessions, particularly territorial concessions, despite the fact that Russia currently controls more than 20% of Ukraine, and is likely to retain these territories after the ceasefire. Previously, he insisted that negotiations are possible only after the complete withdrawal of Russian troops, but now he focuses on the long-term security of Ukraine, and not on the immediate return of territories.

The change in Zelenskyi’s rhetoric, which was noticed by both Ukrainian and Western officials, is probably related to the deterioration of the situation at the front and the arrival of a new administration in the United States, which calls into question further security assistance to Ukraine. Previously, Ukrainian officials emphasized the need to return all territories, including Crimea, as a condition for any peace agreement. Recently, however, Zelenskyi has focused more on a lasting peace for Ukraine, trying to secure NATO membership and other security guarantees, including the deployment of Western peacekeepers to prevent future Russian attacks.

Officials note that the change in Zelenskyi’s position is probably aimed at improving relations with Trump, who is focusing on ending the war. But the Ukrainian president is also trying to ensure that Ukraine is not left without important security guarantors if negotiations do not take place.

Against the background of these changes, it is difficult to assess Putin’s readiness for negotiations, as he continues to make demands for the surrender of Ukraine. Zelensky emphasizes the importance of security guarantees because of a deep distrust of Russia and fears that without such guarantees, Putin may launch another invasion in the future.

Ukraine’s European allies are also trying to take into account the new reality, fearing that the Trump administration may reduce funding for Kyiv. During the talks with NATO, the need to increase defense spending is being discussed in order to counter threats from Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the world to strengthen sanctions against Russia’s shadow tanker fleet.

We will also remind you that a joint investigation by Politico and the non-profit journalistic group SourceMaterial revealed at least nine cases when vessels of the Russian “shadow fleet” left oil spills in world waters, starting in 2021.
