President Volodymyr Zelenskyi held a meeting in Kyiv with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Albania Elisa Spiropali. The parties discussed military cooperation, European integration and increased pressure on Russia.
According to Zelenskyi, the very fact of the arrival of the Albanian minister in wartime conditions is an important signal of support for Ukraine from Tirana. “Elisa Spiropaly’s visit to Kyiv is a strong signal of support for our country,” the president noted.
During the negotiations, the parties focused primarily on issues of defense cooperation. It was about the development of military production, cooperation in the field of security, as well as European integration, which Kyiv and Tirana consider a common strategic goal. Separately, Zelensky reported that the PURL program was discussed and that Albania might join it already this year.
“First of all, during the meeting, they discussed military cooperation – defense production, the integration of Ukraine and Albania into the EU – this is a common goal of our countries – and the development of the PURL program, namely the possible joining of Albania to the program this year,” the head of state emphasized. The Ukrainian president also informed the Albanian side about the diplomatic efforts of Ukraine together with its partners aimed at achieving a just peace.
Particular attention was paid to sanctions against the Russian Federation. Zelensky emphasized that sanctions pressure remains one of the key tools for deterring the aggressor. “We also discussed the strengthening of sanctions against the Russian Federation. Sanctions are a critical tool for weakening Russia’s ability to continue the war,” he said.
During the meeting, the President of Ukraine also noted Albania’s contribution to Ukraine’s support. Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Elisa Spiropaly with the Order of Princess Olga of the 1st degree.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, Albania has consistently supported Ukraine on international platforms, in particular within the framework of the UN and Euro-Atlantic structures, and advocates increasing international pressure on Moscow.
