President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not sign the law on increasing responsibility for the illegal circulation of wood, which has been named “the law on firewood”.
This was stated by presidential adviser Dmytro Lytvyn, BBC reports on Tuesday, November 5.
According to Lytvyn, due to technical reasons, the time to impose a veto has passed.
On October 10, the Verkhovna Rada supported the draft law on strengthening responsibility for offenses in the field of forest use and combating illegal timber trafficking.

The current legislation provides for this offense a fine of 17 to 25.5 thousand hryvnias, while the new law increases it to the level of 34 to 85 thousand hryvnias or to restriction of liberty for up to three years.
If damage was caused to trees or shrubs growing in parks, squares, historical and cultural reserves, the fine will be from 85 to 170 thousand hryvnias. It is also possible to restrict freedom for a period of three to five years.
The co-author of the document, People’s Deputy from the Servant of the People, Maksym Pavlyuk, stated that the media reports that the draft law allegedly prohibits people without valid documents from storing firewood at home for their own use are false.
“In other words, a person bears no responsibility for storing 30 cubic meters of pine wood or 15 cubic meters of oak wood. This is the volume that a household needs for the heating season, and even some with a reserve,” said the People’s Deputy.
Pavlyuk clarified that criminal liability arises for the storage of firewood in the amount of more than 30 thousand hryvnias.
