According to Zelenskyi, the Ukrainian and American teams have already held consultations, and the basic parameters of the guarantees were agreed on the day before at the level of the presidents. Currently, we are talking about agreements for a period of 15 years with the possibility of extension. “We spoke in teams. Yesterday we confirmed with the US president that we will have strong security guarantees from the United States. Indeed, it is not forever – in the documents it is for 15 years with the possibility of extending these security guarantees,” said Zelensky.
At the same time, the president emphasized that Ukraine needs a much longer security horizon, given the long war with Russia. That is why he raised this issue directly in a conversation with Donald Trump. “I told him that we are already at war, and it has been going on for almost 15 years. Therefore, I would very much like the guarantees to be longer,” the head of state explained.
Zelensky added that he suggested considering the option of guarantees for 30, 40 or even 50 years. In his opinion, such a decision could become a landmark not only for Ukraine, but also for the United States itself. “I told him that we would very much like to consider the possibility of 30–40–50 years. And this will then be a historic decision by President Trump. The president said he would think,” Zelenskyy noted.
The President of Ukraine did not specify in which format such guarantees could be established – a bilateral agreement or a broader international mechanism. At the same time, he emphasized that for Ukraine the key is not only the term, but also the actual content of the guarantees, which should make it impossible for Russia to attack again in the future.
