President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had the first telephone conversation with Pope Lion XIV.
The Head of State reported this on Facebook, noting that the conversation was “very warm and truly subject”.
According to Zelensky, he thanked the Pontiff for the support of Ukraine and Ukrainians – in particular for the clear position of the Vatican on the need for just and long peace, as well as the release of Ukrainian prisoners.
“We very much appreciate the words of his holiness about the need to achieve just and long peace for our country and release prisoners,” the President wrote.
Particular attention was paid to Russian children deported by Russia. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is counting on the assistance of the Vatican in their return to families.
The President also informed the Pope about Ukraine’s agreement with international partners – from now on, a complete and unconditional ceasefire should begin for at least 30 days. Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine is ready for negotiations in any format.
“We have repeatedly emphasized our readiness for direct negotiations,” he said.
The President also invited the Pope to make an apostolic visit to Ukraine: “Such a visit would bring true hope for all believers, for all our people.”
The parties agreed to maintain constant contact and prepare a personal meeting in the near future.
We will remind, on May 9, under the ancient murals of Michelangelo in the Sistine chapel of Pope, the Roman Lion XIV held his first mass. The pontiff began worship in English and said that his papacy would help the Catholic Church to become a beacon for the world in these difficult times.
We have already reported that the new Pope, American Cardinal Robert Prevo, told about his hobby – tennis.
