The wild herd of cattle of the Chernobyl reserve successfully survived the winter period, but the composition of the group has changed significantly. The former leaders – the huge bull Trump and his successor Xi – are now gone, and the new head of the herd has become the brash and self-confident Korogod, named after the local nature conservation research department.
Today, the herd consists of 12 individuals, half of which are adult cows. Scientists are happy about the survival of two young calves, although both turned out to be bulls, which slightly limits the prospects for rapid population growth. Despite the deep snow and frost, the animals look healthy and well-fed. “The korogod shows considerable courage, often standing on the side of the road, begging people for food and various treats,” the researchers report.
The life of wild bulls remains dangerous. Recently, experts recorded an attempt to approach the herd of a group of four wolves. One of the bulls bravely followed the tracks of the predators to “find out the relationship” and protect the group. Such a militant attitude gives hope that the herd will be able to defend itself against natural enemies.

Scientists continue to observe Korogod and his wards, waiting for the arrival of spring, when it will be possible to finally assess the success of the wintering of this unique population.
