Celebration of Medica Day in Ukraine
The doctor began to celebrate the day of the USSR – since 1980 the professional holiday of health workers has been celebrated every third Sunday of June. In independent Ukraine, this tradition was officially approved in 1994, then the date was left for the former.
In 2023, the holiday was to take place on June 18, but a few days before, the President of Ukraine signed a decree according to which the day of the doctor in Ukraine was celebrated annually on July 27. The date of the holiday was changed consciously: to abandon the Soviet tradition and to assert their own.
Church holiday
On July 27, the church calendar is the day of the memory of the Holy Martyr and Healer Panteleimon. Saint Panteleimon is considered the patron saint of doctors, healers and anyone who helps to get rid of diseases. According to legend, the saint helped all suffering for free, so he is honored as a symbol of mercy and selfless service to people.
Thus, on July 27, a healthcare provider in Ukraine is not a formality, but a way to emphasize a high medicine mission, especially in the present difficult wartime.

Military and civilian doctors receive gratitude from the President, the heads of administrations and mayors, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defense – for the courage, dedication and professionalism of doctors, nurses, paramedics and volunteers are awarded state and departmental awards. Particular attention is paid to the selfless work of physicians who save lives on the front line, in hospitals and during evacuation.
