January 12, 2026, Monday, will be the 1418th day of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.

On this day, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the holy martyr Tatiana of Rome, a symbol of unbreakable faith.

At the same time, Ukrainians celebrate the national date — the Day of the Ukrainian political prisoner, dedicated to freedom fighters.

Saint Tatyana was born in Rome at the beginning of the 3rd century in the family of a high-ranking official who secretly professed Christianity. The young girl refused a noble marriage, took a vow of chastity and became a deaconess in the temple.

During the persecution of Christians under the emperor Alexander Severus, she was brutally tortured: beaten with iron, thrown to a lion, burned with fire – and the martyr was miraculously saved. Only the sword put an end to her suffering, strengthening the faith of thousands of Romans in Christ.

In Ukraine, Tatyana’s day is associated with omens for the weather and the harvest. If it snows, expect a white summer with a good harvest of berries. The sun on Tatyana promises a hot July and mushroom season.

Believers pray to the saint for success in studies, health and protection from troubles – a tradition that goes back centuries.

The Ukrainian political prisoner’s day was started by Vyacheslav Chornovil in 1975 in the Soviet camps as a protest against repression.

The date reminds us of the mass arrests of January 12–14, 1972: Svitlichnyi, Sverstyuk, Stus, Dzyuba and other dissidents were imprisoned for speaking the truth about Ukraine.

They were given 7 years in camps and 5 years of exile – to Mordovia, Siberia or mental hospitals. This wave of “general pogrom” of the sixties became a turning point in the struggle for independence.

We will remind you that Epiphany is one of the most important Christian holidays in Ukraine.

Also, Epiphany Christmas Eve, which is popularly called the Hungry Day, will be celebrated on January 5 in 2026 according to the new church calendar.
