On Sunday, December 7, the Orthodox will honor the memory of Saint Ambrose of Mediolan, an outstanding theologian and one of the great teachers of the Church, whose influence on Christian history was significant.
Saint Ambrose of Mediolan (339–397) lived in the 4th century and was the governor of Northern Italy before he was ordained. Contrary to tradition, the people of Milan (Mediolan) demanded to elect him as a bishop, although Ambrose was not even baptized.
He became famous for his indomitable faith and principles. Ambrose had a powerful gift of eloquence and was known as one of the best preachers of his time. He actively fought heresies, especially Arianism, and was not afraid to confront secular authorities, including the emperor Theodosius himself, calling him to repentance. Saint Ambrose was also the spiritual mentor of Blessed Augustine.
Our ancestors believed that the omens of this day could predict what the weather would be like in the future:
- If the weather is clear and sunny on Ambrose, the winter will be mild.
- If a heavy snowfall began on this day, then there will be a bountiful harvest in the summer.
- On Ambrose, the girls arranged gatherings to discuss the upcoming Christmas and holidays.
- According to folk custom, this day was the end of all festivities and celebrations until Christmas itself.
- If frost is visible on the tree branches, wait for a warm summer.
We will remind you that December is the month of waiting for Christmas, summing up the year and gratitude for what you have experienced. In the Orthodox calendar, this is the time when the Christmas fast continues and Christmas is approaching – one of the biggest Christian holidays.
