On this Friday, December 18, the Orthodox Church remembers the holy martyr Sebastian (head of the Praetorian Guard under the Roman emperors) and his companions, honoring the indomitable courage of the Roman soldier who put loyalty to God above earthly glory and honors.

Sevastian was a secret Christian and helped his brothers in faith who were in prisons. By his example and words, Sevastiyan inspired people to a powerful spiritual feat. According to legend, it was thanks to his preaching that Zoya, the wife of the royal treasurer, who was mute for six years and was healed after the prayer of the saint, converted to faith.

When the faith of Sebastian became known to the emperor, the saint was ordered to be executed. They tied him to a pole and fired many arrows, but he miraculously survived. After his recovery, Sebastiyan again openly defended the Christians, for which he was beaten to death. His wife Zoya was also martyred for Christ. Their steadfastness became a powerful symbol of Christian sacrifice.

We will remind that on December 17, the Orthodox Church honored the memory of the prophet Daniel and three holy youths – Ananias, Azarias and Misail.

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, the Orthodox Church honored the holy martyrs Tires, Leukius, Philemon, Apollonius and Kalinikus. They showed indomitable faith and courage during the persecutions in the 3rd century.

In Ukraine annually celebrate Christmas, which is an important event for Christianity, symbolizing the birth of the Savior. With the transition of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to the New Julian style, the date of the celebration shifted from January 7 to December 25.
