The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution aimed at promoting sustainable peace in Ukraine, with a vote tally of 107 in favor and 12 against on February 24. The resolution, initiated by Ukraine, reflects the international community’s stance on the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed gratitude to the 107 member states that supported the resolution, emphasizing the importance of a unified international position during critical moments. He stated, “This is not just another vote for us. It confirms that Ukraine is not alone, and that the principles of the UN Charter continue to matter.”
The resolution addresses the devastating and long-lasting impacts of Russia’s full-scale invasion, which has now persisted for four years. It calls for a just and lasting peace based on international law, as well as for the complete exchange of prisoners of war and the return of deported civilians, including children.
Additionally, the General Assembly acknowledged the efforts of the United States, European nations, and other member states to bring an end to the conflict. The assembly’s statement reflects growing concerns about regional and global stability amid the ongoing war.
In recent months, Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia have engaged in several rounds of trilateral talks aimed at resolving the conflict. While specific outcomes have not been disclosed, a notable agreement was reached on February 5 regarding a prisoner exchange—the first in five months.
Stephen Witkoff, a special envoy for former President Donald Trump, indicated in a Fox News interview that he anticipates “good news” in the coming weeks, hinting at the possibility of a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Despite U.S. mediation efforts, Russia has shown little willingness to soften its demands, which include Ukraine’s relinquishment of territories in the Donbas region. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to seek robust security guarantees from the U.S. and European allies to protect itself from future aggression.
The UN General Assembly's recent resolution supporting sustainable peace in Ukraine marks a significant international endorsement amidst ongoing conflict. As diplomatic efforts continue, the situation remains complex with both sides holding firm to their positions.
