The Ukrainian delegation headed by Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov is preparing for a visit to South Korea. There, the parties will discuss the possibility of providing military assistance.
The visit may take place on Wednesday, November 27, according to the South China Morning Post.
Sources of the publication noted that Kyiv plans to present a list of requests, which will include, in particular, anti-aircraft missiles and artillery systems.
South Korea, which previously limited its support to Ukraine by non-lethal means, may reconsider its position.
President Yoon Suk-yeol recently said that Seoul is ready to consider supplying weapons to Ukraine, depending on the development of military cooperation between the Russian Federation and North Korea. However, observers believe that the caution of the South Korean authorities may be affected by the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections in the United States.
Seoul’s decision will depend on internal and external factors, including pressure from Moscow and resistance from the South Korean opposition. Some parliamentarians have already threatened to impeach the defense minister if South Korea agrees to supply weapons.
Russia, in turn, warns Seoul against such steps, saying that it will lead to the destruction of bilateral relations. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Rudenko noted that Seoul should avoid actions that could undermine long-term national interests.
Against the background of strengthening military cooperation between the Russian Federation and North Korea, Ukraine continues to seek support. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his intention to send a “detailed request” to South Korea for the supply of artillery and air defense systems, and recently discussed with South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol the issue of North Korean military participation in the war on the side of Russia.
Yoon Seok-yeol previously said that South Korea “will not remain indifferent” if the DPRK sends its special forces to participate in hostilities, promising consistent support for Ukraine in the event of an escalation.
In addition, South Korea plans to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine in the amount of 6 million US dollars. The funds will come within the framework of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative.
Military personnel from the DPRK in Russia were assigned to an airborne brigade and a marine brigade. Some of these soldiers have already entered combat, South Korean intelligence said.
