Ukraine can go through the winter without blackouts if the temperature does not fall below zero degrees Celsius. At -10 there will be no light for four hours a day.
This was reported by acting Oleksiy Brecht, chairman of the board of NEC “Ukrenergo”, writes Interfax-Ukraine.
“At temperatures that will be characterized by either zero or positive values, we will go through this period without restrictions. If we are talking about a temperature of minus 10-15 degrees Celsius, restrictions are possible – they should not exceed 1-1.5 thousand MW of power,” he said.
The head of the company clarified that the specified restrictions are equivalent to one line of hourly outage schedules (4 hours per day – EP).
According to the updated energy balance of the system operator for the autumn-winter period of 2024-2025, which was prepared by the company last week, Ukraine can expect minor electricity restrictions only for three months: in December-February.
As Brecht explained, in the scenario of 10-15 degrees of frost for three days or more, the power deficit in the combined power system can amount to 2-2.5 thousand MW, which can be compared to two rounds of blackouts (about 8 hours – EP). However, the indicated values are marginal and the company has worked out a number of compensatory factors that provide for a decrease in the deficit.
Among such factors, he named the expected increase in electricity imports from 1.7 GW to 2 GW, the possibility of using emergency aid from European countries in the amount of 200 MW, the planned introduction by the end of the year of distributed generation facilities of 500 MW, as well as the restoration of an additional 1 GW before winter heat generation capacities.
Earlier, Minister of Energy German Galushchenko predicted that Ukraine will pass the winter in a normal mode of electricity supply, provided there are no new heavy blows from the Russian Federation on energy.
And the former head of Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, in an interview with the European Parliament, stated that power outages are possible in the winter, even if all plans to restore generation facilities are implemented.
