Most Ukrainians are convinced that even if the war is frozen, Russia will try to attack again, and at the same time they hope for European support in case of a second invasion. This is evidenced by the survey results of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
“The majority of Ukrainians – 57% – expect that Russia will try to attack again even if the war on the current front line is “frozen” and security guarantees are obtained. Another 26% estimate the probability as 50 to 50 (which also reflects a fairly significant fear of a repeat attack),” the survey report states.
At the same time, only 11% of respondents believe that Russia will not attack again.
Regarding potential support, 59% of Ukrainians expect that Europe will provide all necessary assistance in the event of a new invasion, while 31% believe that support will not be sufficient. The US is more uncertain: only 39% expect full aid, while 40% believe the US will not provide support, and another 20% were undecided.
The survey was conducted from January 9 to 14, 2026 by the method of telephone interviews (CATI) among 601 respondents in the entire territory controlled by the government of Ukraine. The sample did not include residents of temporarily occupied territories, as well as Ukrainians who left abroad after February 24, 2022.
The formal statistical sampling error does not exceed 5.3% for indicators close to 50%, 4.6% for indicators close to 25% and 3.2% for indicators close to 10%. Under conditions of war, systematic deviations are additionally possible.
In accordance with survey Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), the trust of Ukrainians in the United States and NATO is significant decreased while the European Union continues to be perceived as a reliable ally.
