Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed skepticism regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to engage in meaningful peace negotiations. During a recent interview, Zelensky suggested that Russia’s apparent interest in talks is primarily driven by external pressures, particularly from the United States.
Zelensky pointed out that Moscow declined an American proposal to hold negotiations in the U.S., insisting instead on European venues. This shift raises questions about Russia’s intentions, especially in light of rising oil prices and the U.S. focus on other international conflicts, such as the situation in Iran.
When asked if this indicates that Russia feels it no longer needs to pretend to seek peace, Zelensky asserted, “First of all, they never wanted this. I’m sharing my opinion. I know that my colleagues in the U.S. sometimes have a different view… Therefore, Putin never wanted to stop the war. They feared the actions of President Trump and pressure from America. So he played this game, pretending to want negotiations.”
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the necessity for the U.S. to maintain significant pressure on Putin, arguing that without it, genuine negotiations would not occur. He stated, “He only wants ultimatums from us to leave our territory. But he will not stop there… That is not enough for him.”
Zelensky also highlighted that the situation in Iran and the potential easing of sanctions could provide Putin with financial resources and increased confidence to prolong the conflict.
In conclusion, Zelensky reiterated the importance of scheduling upcoming trilateral talks, urging the U.S. to set a clear date for negotiations. He remarked, “Currently, the American side has postponed the meeting due to Iran. But if we truly want to stop the war, we must meet. We need to meet at the level of technical groups… at the leaders’ level. We need more pressure on Russia. If we do not take these steps, we will not move closer to peace.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised concerns about Russia's true intentions regarding peace talks, asserting that Putin never genuinely sought to end the war. He emphasized the need for continued U.S. pressure on Russia and called for a clear schedule for future negotiations.
