Ukrainian Military Estimates Russian Casualties at Over 1.25 Million

The Ukrainian General Staff reported on February 15 that Russian military casualties have reached approximately 1,253,270 personnel since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine. This figure includes an estimated loss of around 1,250 soldiers in the past 24 hours alone.

According to the latest updates from the General Staff, Russian forces have also suffered significant losses in military equipment. The reported figures include:

  • Tanks: 11,672 (an increase of 4 in the last day)
  • Armored combat vehicles: 24,037 (up by 6)
  • Artillery systems: 37,293 (an increase of 11)
  • Multiple launch rocket systems: 1,648 (up by 3)
  • Anti-aircraft systems: 1,300
  • Aircraft: 435
  • Helicopters: 347
  • Tactical drones: 134,858 (an increase of 552)
  • Cruise missiles: 4,286
  • Ships and boats: 29
  • Submarines: 2
  • Automotive vehicles and tankers: 78,485 (up by 97)
  • Specialized equipment: 4,071

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi previously stated that in January alone, Russian losses from killed and severely wounded personnel exceeded 31,700, surpassing the number of reinforcements entering the Russian military.

Russia has not officially disclosed its casualty figures since September 2022, when it reported 5,937 fatalities. In contrast, independent investigations by Russian media outlet Mediazona, the BBC Russian Service, and volunteer teams have identified over 165,600 names of Russian soldiers killed in the conflict since February 2022, although they caution that this list is not exhaustive due to the limited availability of information on military casualties.

International organizations and intelligence agencies have provided significantly higher estimates of Russian losses. A NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity in December 2025, indicated that the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian military could approach 1.15 million, citing an average daily loss of approximately 1,100 personnel in November.

Ukraine has also been reticent in disclosing its own casualty figures, with President Volodymyr Zelensky announcing that Ukraine’s military losses since February 2022 stand at 55,000 dead. He noted that this figure includes both regular and mobilized soldiers, alongside a considerable number of individuals classified as missing in action.

On January 13, 2025, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi remarked that the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to reduce personnel losses by 13% during the previous year, although he did not provide specific details regarding the total number of Ukrainian casualties.

The Ukrainian General Staff has provided updated estimates on Russian military casualties, reporting over 1.25 million personnel lost since the conflict began. Independent investigations suggest that actual figures may be higher, while Ukraine's own military losses have been officially stated at 55,000 dead.
