The Ukrainian human rights activist, journalist, military and former prisoners of war Maxim Butkevich became the winner of this year’s Vaclav Gavel Prize in the field of human rights.
The winner was announced by the President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Theodoros Ruspoulos reports RBC-Ukraine .
Maxim Butkevich is a well -known Ukrainian journalist, human rights activist, as well as co -founder of the Center of Human Rights “Change” and “Public Radio”.
- Military service and captivity: after a full -scale invasion of Russia in 2022, he voluntarily joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and became a platoon commander.
- Prison: He was captured, was sentenced to the Russians to 13 years in prison and spent more than two years in cruel conditions.
- Liberation: It was released in October 2024 during the exchange of prisoners.
The Vaclav Gavel Human Rights Prize is an annual award that is awarded for outstanding services to human rights protection in Europe and beyond.
