Ukrainian gamers have created a copy of Mariupol in Minecraft

A Ukrainian team of volunteers and gamers is implementing a large-scale project to recreate pre-war Mariupol in the Minecraft game on a 1:1 scale. This initiative is part of the global Build The Earth project, which was started in 2020 by blogger PippenFTS. However, for Ukrainians, this is not just a game, but a way to “preserve” the architectural and cultural identity of the city, which was almost completely destroyed and occupied by Russia.

The Mariupol City Council writes about this.

The BTE Ukraine team uses Google Maps satellite images, archival photos, and street panoramas to reproduce the topography, residential neighborhoods, and traffic junctions as accurately as possible.

What has already been played in the virtual city:

  • Drama theater: The symbol of the city’s tragedy is reproduced in its original form, as it was before the air strike in March 2022.

  • “Milan” mural: Image of a girl who suffered from shelling back in 2015. In the real city, the occupiers destroyed this mural, but in Minecraft it has been restored as an important symbol of resilience.

  • Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God: The unique architecture of the temple and the surrounding area have been recreated.

  • Infrastructure: In the game, you can see detailed tram tracks, shop signs and even authentic facades of buildings in the city center.

The project is implemented on the bteukraine.com server. In order to see the city with your own eyes, you need a licensed version of Minecraft (the recommended version is 1.21.4). The work is done in “creative mode”, which allows players to freely fly over the city and explore the streets they used to walk before the full-scale invasion.

The goal of the project is to give Mariupol residents who have lost their homes the opportunity to walk their native routes again and preserve the image of Ukrainian Mariupol for future generations. This is a digital countermeasure to the attempts of the Russian Federation to erase the true history and appearance of the city through the occupation’s “reconstruction” on the bones.

Meanwhile, in Great Britain, a Ukrainian schoolboy sold a Minecraft server and is now buying a house for his mother .

The Sumy regional TCC and SP called on young people to sign the “18-24” contract, comparing military service in the Armed Forces to a game Minecraft.
