Ukrainian military forces have successfully struck a Russian Be-12 amphibious aircraft located in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea. The attack was confirmed by the General Staff of Ukraine.
The military reported that the amphibious aircraft was hit in the vicinity of Kacha, although the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The Be-12, known as “Chaika,” is a Soviet-designed multi-role amphibious aircraft primarily used for anti-submarine warfare. It was developed as a successor to the earlier Be-6 model and was intended for locating and destroying submarines, as well as conducting search and rescue missions.
Approximately 140 units of the Be-12 were produced, making it one of the largest series-produced amphibious aircraft in the world at the time of its creation. The aircraft features a high-mounted wing design and is powered by two turboprop engines.
Equipped with advanced detection systems, including radar and hydroacoustic equipment, the Be-12 can carry bombs, torpedoes, and other anti-submarine armaments. Beyond its military applications, some variants of the Be-12 have been adapted for search and rescue operations, transport duties, and even firefighting tasks.
