On March 16 and 17, Ukrainian defense forces conducted strikes on two significant Russian military production facilities. The targeted sites included the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk and an aircraft repair facility in Staraya Russa.
The Aviastar plant is crucial for the production of military transport aircraft, including the Il-76MD-90A and the Il-78M-90A refueling aircraft. It also services the remaining An-124 Ruslan aircraft in the Russian fleet.
According to preliminary reports, the strikes damaged the climate shelter and aircraft parking areas at the facility. Some aircraft on the premises sustained varying degrees of damage, and assessments of the overall impact are ongoing.
In addition, the Ukrainian forces targeted the 123rd Aircraft Repair Plant in Staraya Russa, located in the Novgorod region. This facility specializes in the restoration of Russian aviation assets.
Described as a unique facility in Russia, it offers a full cycle of repair and modernization for heavy transport aircraft, including the Il-76 and Il-78, as well as aviation engines like the D-30KP and AI-20.
The plant possesses its own airfield and infrastructure, allowing it to operate independently. It plays a role in fulfilling state defense orders for Russian military operations and is involved in export contracts and import substitution programs.
According to Ukrainian sources, targeting such facilities directly impacts the enemy’s ability to maintain and restore its aviation capabilities.
Ukrainian defense forces have struck two key Russian military production facilities, impacting the production and repair of crucial aircraft. These actions are seen as significant in hindering Russia's aviation capabilities.
