Ukrainian Forces Maintain Control in Zaporizhzhia Amid Ongoing Operations

Ukrainian military officials have stated that there is currently no immediate threat of a Russian offensive in the Zaporizhzhia region. Dmitry ‘Perun’ Filatov, commander of the 1st Separate Assault Brigade, confirmed in an interview that Zaporizhzhia remains secure for now.

Filatov noted that the long-term situation depends on the unfolding events in the coming days. He emphasized, “The outcome will depend on how these events play out. I am aware of the commander-in-chief’s plans in detail, but the key question is whether the country can provide sufficient resources to implement them. The plan is solid, with both operational and strategic components.”

Despite the current stability, Filatov acknowledged that military operations are not proceeding as planned. He explained that while commanders typically prepare multiple contingency plans, the unpredictability of warfare means that even ten plans might not align with actual developments.

Filatov expressed optimism that the commander-in-chief’s strategy could address challenges in both the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions. He remarked, “Experience shows that the commander-in-chief is adept at planning complex operations. The fact that we are executing this under conditions of numerical superiority by the enemy demonstrates our army’s effectiveness. However, resource balance remains critical.”

On March 7, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense reported that, in conjunction with Defense Forces, they successfully halted the Russian army’s advance in the Zaporizhzhia sector. Over the past three months, the ‘Timur Special Unit’ has been conducting a comprehensive defensive operation aimed at disrupting enemy offensive plans and preventing their advance toward the regional center.

Ukrainian forces are regaining control over territories at the intersection of Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhia regions, referred to as the Alexandrovsky direction by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Details surrounding the initiation of Ukraine’s counteroffensive actions in this area remain largely undisclosed, with Ukrainian defenders operating under a veil of near-complete information silence.

Reports began surfacing in mid-February from Z-war correspondents and analysts, including Konstantin Mashovets from the ‘Information Resistance’ group and the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW). On February 17, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi announced successful counterattacks and assaults around Huliaipole.

In a recent interview with Corriere Della Sera published on March 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that since early 2026, Ukraine has reclaimed 460 square kilometers of its territory, likely referring to the contested areas among the three regions. During a press conference on March 8, he clarified that control had been restored over approximately 400-435 square kilometers in southern Ukraine.

Ukrainian military leaders report that the Zaporizhzhia region is currently secure from Russian advances, with ongoing operations aimed at reclaiming territory. The effectiveness of these strategies will depend on resource availability and the unfolding military situation in the coming days.
