Ukrainian troops in the Kupiansk area are contending with daily assaults from Russian forces, encountering significant challenges from an elite unit deployed specifically to this front. The Russian unit, known as “Rubikon,” has intensified operations aimed at disrupting supply lines to Ukrainian positions.
According to Ukrainian officer Zolotaryov, the primary objective of the Rubikon unit is to halt the delivery of supplies to the frontline, utilizing drones to target transport vehicles every three to five minutes.
In response to these persistent attacks, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have adapted their logistics strategies. Traditional transport methods, including trucks and all-terrain vehicles, have become increasingly vulnerable, leading to the deployment of ground-based robotic systems, referred to as NPKs and “Vampires.” These unmanned systems are designed to operate without drivers, delivering ammunition, drones, and personnel while navigating through hostile environments.
Despite the ongoing pressure from Russian forces, Ukrainian positions in the Kupiansk sector remain stable. Zolotaryov noted, “The enemy is attempting to advance, but we have established a kill zone that prevents them from making significant gains or occupying new territories.” The Orion unit has been stationed in this area since late spring 2025, and their mission has remained consistent: to thwart enemy advances, which, so far, have yielded no results.
