Ukraine will start exhumation of the remains of UPA soldiers in Poland, named the date

The Ukrainian expedition will start search and exhumation works in the Polish village of Yurechkova on September 30. 20 UPA soldiers can be buried there, who died in 1947 in battle with the Poles. The Ukrainian expedition will start search and exhumation works in the Polish village Yurechkova on September 30. 20 UPA soldiers can be buried there, who died in 1947 in battle with the Poles.

According to Deputy Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Andriy Nadzhos, the expedition is scheduled for September 29.

The work will begin the next day in the forest area where the old stone cross is. In the first stage, the topsoil is removed. Previously, in Yurechkova can be found the remains near 20 UPA soldiers. The works themselves will last about a month.

In general, the Polish side agreed to Ukraine for conducting search and exhumation works on 4 locations. Andriy Nadzhos noted that due to limited resources – lack of specialists and financing – Ukraine cannot carry out work on more places at the same time. The work on the field of excavations depends on the weather conditions, so the active stage lasts only six months a year. With regard to DNA testing of the remains found, it is planned to be carried out in the medium term.

The exhumation of the victims of the Volyn tragedy in Ukraine began in April. The works began with Ternopil region.

Ukraine has allowed Poland to search and exhumulate the victims of the Volyn tragedy. In turn, Poland will support Ukraine’s aspirations in the EU.

Before that, Polish Defense Minister Vladislav Kosynia-Kkysh stated that the official Warsaw should not approve of Ukraine’s membership in the European Union in the future until the issue of the Volyn tragedy in 1943 was resolved.
