Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga did not call Mikheil Kavelashvili the president of Georgia and explained that Ukraine will join the EU’s position on this issue.
Sybiga said this in an interview with European Pravda.
To a question about who official Kyiv considers to be the president of Georgia, Sybiga answered with the words that Ukraine supports the Georgian people and recognizes states, not leaders.
“We condemn the decision to suspend European integration, we condemn numerous violations during the parliamentary elections, we condemn the disproportionate repression of the Georgian authorities against their own citizens. We carefully studied the OSCE report, which clearly indicates these numerous violations. His main recommendation is to hold new elections to eliminate the root cause of the problems. I emphasize: no country, and especially the Russian Federation, has the right of veto regarding the geopolitical choice of the people, regarding the country’s participation in international unions and alliances,” Andriy Sybiga noted.
He recalled the sanctions that Ukraine was among the first to introduce against officials involved in violations of the rights of Georgian citizens.
“The affirmation of democratic values, the protection of human rights, the observance of standards are not empty words for us, as a state that has passed its Maidans. That’s why I don’t believe in any successful governments and I don’t believe in power models that are built against the will of the people. And we are also convinced that the choice of the Georgian people is Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspiration,” Sybiga said.
After that, he was asked whether Ukraine should count on the same approach to Kavelashvili as to Alexander Lukashenko, whom the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not call the president in its statements.
“I assure you that we have very carefully read the article on “European Truth” on this matter. I can only add that our approach will be built on the approach of the European Union. We, as a state that aspires to acquire full membership in the EU, are obliged to join the political assessments and statements of the European Union,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
We will remind that on December 29, the inauguration ceremony of Mikheil Kavelashvili took place in the building of the Parliament of Georgia. At the same time, the current head of state Salome Zurabishvili, the opposition and Western countries do not recognize the so-called president.
The opposition president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, decided to leave the presidential palace. She left her post on the day of Mykhailo Kavelashvili’s inauguration.
Earlier, Prime Minister of Georgia Iraklii Kobakhidze threatened current President Salome Zurabishvili with prison if she refuses to leave the residence of the head of state after the end of her term of office.
In Tbilisi, near the Georgian parliament building, the police detained demonstrators who came out to protest against the inauguration of the so-called president.
