Ukraine Sets Timeline for Peace Talks with Russia Amid U.S. Election Context

The head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, Kyrylo Budanov, announced that Ukraine has established a specific timeline for pursuing peace with Russia, indicating that the country is currently adhering to this schedule.

Budanov stated, “We have a clear timeline that we are following. It is conditional, as circumstances can change based on developments. However, we are generally on track with it right now.” This statement reflects Ukraine’s strategic approach to the ongoing conflict.

Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave an interview to Sky News, where he emphasized the urgency of concluding the war before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections in November. He remarked, “This depends on these months—whether we can end the war by autumn. If we can achieve peace, we have this window of opportunity. Right now, that window is open.”

Since 2026, Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia have engaged in three rounds of peace negotiations, with reports suggesting that discussions between Kyiv and Washington have considered the possibility of a peace agreement as early as March. There are also indications that a referendum and elections could take place in May.

In a recent phone call between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, sources from Axios reported that Trump expressed a desire to conclude the war within a month, aiming for a resolution by the end of March.

The fourth round of peace talks is anticipated on March 4-5, and according to Bloomberg, this meeting could be pivotal for finalizing a peace agreement.

Sources indicate that Moscow is prepared to sign a peace memorandum if Ukraine withdraws its troops from the Donbas region. Following this, preparations would begin for a summit involving the leaders of the three nations to confirm the agreement and initiate mutual troop withdrawals.

Additionally, Russia is reportedly willing to pull back its forces from the Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, and is also inclined to drop claims on parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions currently controlled by Ukraine.

Ukraine is actively pursuing a timeline for peace negotiations with Russia, emphasizing the urgency to conclude the conflict before the U.S. midterm elections. Recent discussions and anticipated talks suggest a potential breakthrough in the peace process.
