The Trans-Balkan route connects Ukraine with liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Greece through the territory of Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova.

According to the information of the Ukrainian energy consulting company ExPro, Greek DEPA Commercial, D.Trading (a subsidiary of DTEK) and Swiss Axpo Trading last month reserved capacity to import gas from Greece to Ukraine.
The daily volume of supply is about 0.6 million cubic meters.

Currently, Ukraine imports approximately 23 million cubic meters of gas per day via other routes, including:

  • about 10 million cubic meters m — from Hungary;

  • approximately 8 million cubic meters m — from Poland;

  • approximately 5 million cubic meters m — from Slovakia.

The Trans-Balkan gas pipeline was not used in September and October, and before that it only worked in July and August.
Previously, the route was not in demand due to the high cost of transit through four countries. However, as noted by ExPro, tariff reductions by Moldovan and Romanian operators contributed to an increase in capacity bookings in November.

Former president Volodymyr Zelenskyi reported that are necessary for the import of gas to Ukraine 2 billion dollars of which currently about 750 million is missing .
