Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that Ukraine is prepared to take reciprocal actions in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a ceasefire from 16:00 on April 11 to the end of April 12. Zelensky emphasized the need for a peaceful Easter celebration, free from threats, and reiterated Ukraine’s longstanding proposal for a ceasefire during the holiday period.
In a social media post on April 10, Zelensky stated, “Ukraine has repeatedly expressed its readiness for reciprocal steps. We proposed a ceasefire during the Easter holidays this year and will act accordingly. People need Easter without threats and a real move towards peace, and Russia has a chance to refrain from strikes even after Easter.”
On April 9, the Kremlin announced that Putin had ordered Russian military forces to halt combat operations across all fronts during the specified ceasefire period. However, he cautioned that troops should remain vigilant against potential provocations and aggressive actions from the opposing side.
Earlier in March, Zelensky had expressed Ukraine’s willingness to observe a ceasefire for Easter, which is celebrated by Orthodox and Greek-Catholic communities on April 12. He also mentioned that Ukraine had submitted a corresponding request to the United States, although it remains unclear whether the U.S. would be able to convey this message to Russia. Nonetheless, Zelensky affirmed that the proposal for a ceasefire during Easter remains on the table.
In a previous instance in 2025, Putin had unilaterally declared a ceasefire for Easter lasting one and a half days. During that period, both sides accused each other of numerous violations, although the intensity of hostilities significantly decreased.
