Russia has not officially disclosed its military casualties since September 2022, when it reported 5,937 deaths. Meanwhile, independent Russian media outlets, including Meduza and the BBC Russian Service, along with volunteer teams, have identified the names of 204,626 Russian soldiers killed in the war since February 2022, based on publicly available information. However, they caution that this list is incomplete due to the lack of accessible data on all military personnel fatalities.
International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate that the total number of Russian casualties, including both killed and wounded, may be significantly higher. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, suggested that the total number of casualties could approach 1.15 million.
On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky has been reticent to disclose casualty figures, stating that detailed data would be revealed after the conflict concludes. However, he has periodically shared updates, including a figure of 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed since February 2022, as mentioned in a February 2026 interview with France 2. He also noted that there are many individuals classified as missing in action.
Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on January 13 that the armed forces had managed to reduce personnel losses by 13% in 2025, although he did not provide specific numbers regarding Ukrainian casualties.
Recent reports from Ukraine indicate significant losses for Russian military forces, with estimates suggesting over 1.29 million personnel casualties. Independent sources have identified over 204,000 Russian military deaths, while Ukraine has disclosed its own casualty figures sparingly.
