Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Kyiv has submitted a proposal to Moscow for an energy ceasefire. He stated that if Russia is ready to stop its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Ukraine is prepared to respond in kind.
Zelensky emphasized that the aggressor nation would not seek peace on its own if it continues to fund the war. He stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on the Kremlin, noting that Ukraine is consistently doing its part to combat the ongoing conflict.
“Our long-range sanctions are working effectively and significantly reducing Russian revenue, particularly from oil,” Zelensky remarked. He pointed out that substantial financial losses are necessary to compel Russia to consider a resolution to the war.
The president also mentioned that the current oil market is facing a crisis due to the situation surrounding Iran, which allows oil-producing nations, including Russia, to potentially earn more. However, he asserted that Ukraine’s military capabilities, including drones and missiles, are limiting Russia’s ability to capitalize on this situation.
In a related context, Zelensky addressed the possibility of a ceasefire during the upcoming Easter holidays. He reiterated that Ukraine supports any format for ending the war, provided it does not compromise the dignity and independence of the nation. He expressed a willingness for a ceasefire during the holiday period, but insisted on the need for lasting peace rather than temporary pauses.
In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that there has been no clear initiative from the Ukrainian president regarding an Easter ceasefire.
