Ukraine Maintains Dialogue with US Amid Ongoing Peace Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to maintaining communication with the United States in the context of ongoing peace negotiations. Speaking at a media briefing during the Munich Security Conference, he emphasized the importance of US involvement in the talks.

Zelensky stated, “Our primary task is to keep in touch with the American side. It is essential that we do not find ourselves negotiating exclusively with Russia, as European involvement has been limited thus far.” He highlighted that while Europe is a significant financial supporter of Ukraine’s military efforts, its role in the negotiations has not been as pronounced as desired.

The president noted that Ukraine is in contact with the US on various fronts, mentioning upcoming discussions with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, a senior advisor to former President Donald Trump. Zelensky remarked, “We will ensure that no party in the negotiation process can accuse Ukraine of hindering or failing to support the conclusion of the war.”

He also addressed media narratives that place the responsibility for ending the conflict on Ukraine, asserting that the country is taking a mature approach to diplomacy. “We are making every effort to avoid costly diplomatic mistakes,” he added.

Regarding security guarantees, Zelensky expressed optimism that the parties are nearing an agreement, although discussions about the duration of these guarantees are ongoing. He mentioned that investors require assurances extending beyond 5 to 10 years, with a current proposal from the US for a 15-year guarantee. “We aim for 20 years or more; we will see what the administration and Congress will agree to,” he stated.

On February 14, Zelensky addressed the Munich Security Conference, which runs from February 13 to 15, and includes several European leaders as well as the Ukrainian delegation. Future meetings are planned with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, American senators, and the President of Azerbaijan, among others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of US involvement in peace negotiations with Russia during the Munich Security Conference. He highlighted ongoing discussions about security guarantees and the need for longer-term commitments from the US.
