Olga Stephanyshina’s vicereme on European and Euro -Atlantic integration stated that on May 12, it would be a key date to determine the further fate of negotiations between Ukraine and Hungary to remove the veto for the movement of Kyiv to the European Union.
According to her, it is during the new round of negotiations in the city of Uzhgorod that it will be clear whether a real compromise is possible, whether Budapest will continue to block the EU expansion process.
It should be reminded that the ambitious plans of the leadership of Ukraine and the European Commission on the pace of negotiations on entry in 2025 are currently under threat because of the position of the Hungarian side. On April 29, the Ukrainian delegation visited Budapest to convince Hungarian partners to remove their objections.
Kyiv has submitted proposals aimed at fulfilling the requirements of Budapest in the field of protection of national minorities, in particular on education, implementation of new legislation and the protection of cultural rights of the Hungarian community.
Olga Stefanyshyn stressed that the talks on May 12 will be based on 11 points that were agreed by the parties.
She emphasized: “I can confirm that on May 12 in Uzhgorod there will be negotiations of the Ukrainian and Hungarian delegation on the basis of 11 points. According to the results of these negotiations, I will be able to tell whether a further dialogue with Hungary is possible, whether it is imitation. “
Ukraine, she said, is ready to do “everything possible and impossible” to remove the Hungarian “veto” and unlock negotiations on accession to the EU.
According to the results of the previous negotiations, the parties agreed on regular consultations in Budapest to find a solution that will allow Kiev to extend the way to membership in the European Union.
We will remind, the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban expressed concern about the possible membership of Ukraine in the EU, saying that this decision could be economically disadvantageous for his country.
We have already reported that, as a result of the negotiations held on April 29 in Budapest, Ukraine and Hungary have agreed to launch regular consultations to unlock Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
