Ukraine Introduces Military Service Exemption for Young Soldiers After Contract Completion

The Ukrainian government has announced a new policy granting military service exemptions to young soldiers aged 18 to 25 upon completion of their contract service. This decision aims to provide a structured transition for these individuals back into civilian life.

According to Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, the exemption applies to those who have signed a one-year contract with the Defence Forces and have completed their service. The Cabinet of Ministers has already approved the mechanism for implementing this status, allowing it to be put into practice.

The exemption is valid for a period of 12 months following the end of service. During this time, soldiers may only be called back to duty with their consent, ensuring a recovery period after their military commitment.

This initiative was developed in collaboration with the parliamentary committee on national security, defence, and intelligence. It is seen as a step towards modernising the Ukrainian military structure.

The emphasis on voluntary service reflects a shift towards a professional army model, where military careers are based on the informed choices of citizens. Officials assert that this new approach is intended to strengthen recruitment systems and make military service more predictable for young people.

Ukraine has implemented a policy that exempts young soldiers from military service for a year after completing their contracts. This initiative aims to facilitate their transition to civilian life and modernise the military structure.
