Ukraine managed to return 3,767 Ukrainian men and women from Russian captivity. Almost all of them needed long-term treatment and rehabilitation after torture, humiliation and starvation in Russian prisons and camps, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Monday, October 21.

According to him, the aggressor country Russia is detaining thousands of Ukrainian citizens and continues the forced resettlement of children.

Together with everyone in the world who respects human life, we must do everything to free each and every one. We count on the help of the Vatican and all our partners!” – said in the message of the president.

On October 11, President Zelensky met with Pope Francis in the Vatican. They held negotiations in the Apostolic Palace. Shortly after the meeting and after the death of Viktoria Roshchyna, Zelensky announced that he would give the Vatican a list of Ukrainian journalists who remain in captivity in the Russian Federation.

On October 18, Ukraine and Russia held the 58th exchange of prisoners of war. 95 Ukrainian defenders were returned home. Among them are 34 fighters of the 12th brigade of the Azov National University, who were held captive for more than 2.5 years. Also, as a result of the exchange, the human rights defender and military serviceman Maksym Butkevich was released from captivity.

Instead, Russia took its citizens, most of whom surrendered as prisoners in the Kursk region.

During the last three exchanges, 267 military personnel were returned to Ukraine.
