Ukraine Faces Increased Attacks on Port and Railway Infrastructure Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian officials report a surge in attacks targeting the nation’s port and railway infrastructure, a strategy attributed to Russian forces aiming to disrupt logistics and export capabilities. In an interview with Radio Free Europe, Oleksiy Kuleba, Ukraine’s Minister for Communities and Territories Development, emphasized the importance of these logistical routes, particularly for access to the Donetsk region.

Kuleba stated that Ukrainian railways are currently experiencing nearly ten strikes each night, with port attacks being described as particularly severe. He remarked, “The enemy has unfortunately chosen our logistical component as one of their main targets to deprive us of access to ports and frontline logistics.”

In response to these threats, the Ukrainian government, alongside military forces, is implementing measures to safeguard critical infrastructure. Kuleba mentioned that volunteer territorial defense units are now tasked with drone interception duties at ports and within the railway system, operating under a government decree aimed at enhancing defense capabilities.

He also pointed out Ukraine’s unique experience in developing small-scale air defense systems, which have gained international interest, especially from countries in the Middle East. Kuleba noted, “A few years ago, this capability was not utilized. Now, it is operational in Ukraine, and the demand from Gulf nations for our small air defense systems indicates our success in this area.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on a recent daytime drone strike by Russian forces, asserting that the military continues its efforts to undermine Ukraine and its energy infrastructure. Earlier this month, Zelensky announced that Ukraine would assist Middle Eastern countries in defending against Iranian attacks, with Ukrainian experts deployed for on-ground support.

Reports have emerged that the United States and an unnamed Gulf nation are exploring the purchase of Ukrainian interceptor drones, highlighting the growing recognition of Ukraine’s defense capabilities on the global stage.

Ukraine is experiencing intensified assaults on its port and railway systems, with Russian forces targeting these infrastructures to cripple logistics. Officials are implementing defensive measures, including volunteer units for drone interception, while also exploring international partnerships for air defense systems.
